Whether it happens during a party or while sipping away after a long day at work, dropping red wine on the carpet doesn’t need to cause permanent staining.
The most important thing to do when a spill happens is to act quickly as the tannins in your favourite red can be absorbed into carpet fibers.
Here are some of our top tips for effectively treating the spill.
What you need:
Paper towel
75 ml white vinegar
Non-scented dishwashing soap
Luke-warm water
Thick towel
STEP 1: Be Quick!

If you can, try to spring into action once your glass hits the carpet. Blot the affected area with a white paper towel or clean cloth. If it was a large spill, make sure you use a large towel, placing it over the affected area with even downward pressure. Remember, do not wipe from side to side as this will spread the stain. You should also use the dry parts of the towel, folding it over as you go and then standing on it to try and soak up as much as possible. We recommend that you continue this step until there’s no further transfer of colour from the stain to the towel.
For an old stain, head straight to step two below.

STEP 3: Rinsing Solution

If you have non-scented dishwashing detergent at home, mix a few drops with 1 cup of lukewarm water. Apply the rinsing solution onto the stain with a sponge or a spray bottle. Continue to blot with a cloth or paper towel until there is no further colour transfer. You could also use a towel and stand on the stain for greater absorbency.
STEP 4: Remove Excess Water and Solutions

It’s worth noting that these processes are most effective on a fresh wine stain. Remember, this process won’t set the stain or make it harder to remove with professional cleaning at a later stage.
