The Secret to Removing Red Wine Spills

Paper towel

If you can, try to spring into action once your glass hits the carpet. Blot the affected area with a white paper towel or clean cloth. If it was a large spill, make sure you use a large towel, placing it over the affected area with even downward pressure. Remember, do not wipe from side to side as this will spread the stain. You should also use the dry parts of the towel, folding it over as you go and then standing on it to try and soak up as much as possible. We recommend that you continue this step until there’s no further transfer of colour from the stain to the towel.

Mix 75 ml of white vinegar to 150 ml of water in a spray bottle. Using a clean cloth, mist the solution onto the stain and blot. Repeat as long as the stain continues to transfer to the cloth.

If you have non-scented dishwashing detergent at home, mix a few drops with 1 cup of lukewarm water. Apply the rinsing solution onto the stain with a sponge or a spray bottle. Continue to blot with a cloth or paper towel until there is no further colour transfer. You could also use a towel and stand on the stain for greater absorbency.

Sponge an even, large amount of water onto the stain to rinse out the remaining vinegar solution. Apply heavy pressure with a towel to dry the area and continue until the smell of vinegar is no longer present in the carpet.
